Dental Implants

Have a gap or are missing teeth? Wish to replace your existing dentures?

If your smile could use some improvement due to missing teeth or gaps between teeth, a removable partial such as a bridge, dental implants are a great way to restore your beautiful smile. Or, if you have outdated dentures that simply no longer fit or are severely stained, dental implants can eliminate those issues with a near-permanent solution (minor adjustments may be necessary over time).

What are they?

Dental implants are artificial roots and teeth that are implanted surgically into your upper and/or lower jawbone. A periodontist or dentist (specialists in this field) perform the multi-step process whose end result are permanent looking teeth. With proper oral health and regular return visits, they can last a lifetime. Dental implants are durable, stable and very strong and can last for many, many years. Occasionally some minor adjustment may be necessary depending on how they are managed.

The Process

The process is multi-step, and will require multiple appointments over time; as many as six months. To begin with, a set of x-rays and dental impressions are taken of your teeth and jaw. We want to make sure that there will be sufficient space to fit the implant as well as whether any jawbone or gums require additional care. If all is well, we’ll numb the affected area, and an implant is surgically embedded into the jawbone. This new implant will require time to integrate into the jaw, approximately six months.

Sometimes the post is attached to the anchor, but if not, it may require a second surgical procedure. Less surgery usually means less discomfort, so the post-anchor style is preferred by both patient and dentist alike.

At the completion of additional healing, your artificial teeth are crafted at an independent lab. Once healed, and with new teeth in hand, you will have an appointment to install the artificial tooth to the post and anchor. The fitting is temporary to make adjustments that might be needed until your smile is perfected. The number of implants will determine how many “fittings” appointments will be required, so it may take more than one or two months until your new smile is ready for the world.

After additional healing, your artificial teeth will be permanently attached to the implant. Dental implants can mean the difference between loose dentures, missing teeth or dental appliances that no longer perform well, and new-found happiness.

Why Dental Implants?

There are a number of reasons why someone would require dental implants. Here are some of the most important.

  • To resolve bite problems or jaw pain that is present due to shifting teeth
  • To replace cracked or missing teeth, thereby restoring your smile
  • To aid in chewing, digestion and speech issues resulting from missing teeth
  • To restore your natural smile and facial features like shrunken gums from missing teeth
  • To protect remaining teeth by filling gaps and making real teeth more stable and secure
  • To eliminate the discomfort and embarrassment of ill-fitting dentures or dental appliances
  • To give you a Hollywood smile you can share with the world

Once each step is completed, specific care instructions will be provided to you. As in all oral health matters, good eating habits, a solid home care regimen and routine dental exams are all steps in achieving your dental health goals.
