Periodontal Disease – Maintenance

Twenty-four hours is all the time it takes for plaque to turn into calculus (tartar). Removing it twice daily minimizes the chances of ever having periodontal disease. Regular brushing and flossing is the best home preventative maintenance you can perform. Regularly scheduled visits for exams and cleanings provide the additional assistance to your 1-2 oral hygiene punch.

Once we have completed any periodontal treatments you will still require periodontal cleanings to maintain a healthy smile. These specialized cleanings will be scheduled four times per year. We will check the pockets for good health, along with plaque and calculus removal that may be difficult to remove on a daily basis by your care at home. We will make certain to check above and below the gum line for the presence of any periodontal disease or symptoms of the onset of it.

The Periodontal Maintenance Process

Your quarterly periodontal exam procedures are essential, and will include the following:

  • Diagnostic radiographs (x-rays) will tell us about the presence of tooth decay, tumors and cysts, as well as bone loss.
  • Examination of said x-rays to evaluate tooth and root positioning
  • Periodontal pocket size to determine if they are shrinking or stable
  • Examining previous restorative work — check crowns, fillings, etc.
  • Screen for oral cancer — includes the gums, tongue, cheek tissues, lips and face and neck
  • Removal of plaque and stains via tooth polishing.
  • Oral hygiene health recommendations. We will go over all findings and recommend any improvements or treatments that may be required.
